Throughout their lives, both Booker T. Washington and Malcolm X have had substantial impacts on the black community. While both had different upbringings, one thing is undeniable: their pursuit of education, among other topics, regarding the empowerment of the black community.   For Washington, education represents opportunity and stability. Quote, “The opportunity to secure an education meant everything to me.” This shows how he views learning as a means of gaining skills, earning respect, and improving one's position in society. He wants to use education as a tool for economic independence and social acceptance. For Malcolm X, education meant something way deeper. He said, “I never had been so truly free in my life.” He writes this after teaching himself to read in prison.
